the next big plans?
So as per usual our beloved Mets have run into another series of injuries EARLY on in Spring Training. Nick Madrigal fractured his shoulder over the weekend, Frankie Montas which we have known for a little over a week now has a lat strain that Carlos Mendoza is saying will keep him out for 6-8 weeks, and our surprise Ace from last season Sean Manaea is dealing with a right oblique injury that will also have him miss a couple weeks also looking like he will start the season on the IL as is reported throughout X. The Mets have options. We know one obvious answer the Mets will turn to and that will be Megill. But if they really want to they can bring Butto back into the rotation giving him some lengthier outings here in Spring Training as well. They still have Paul Blackburn on this roster but he’s coming off an injury and they also brought in Griffin Canning. They definitely missed out on some great options in the offseason with Corbin Burnes going to the Diamondbacks, Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki both going to the Dodgers, and a couple others throughout the league. We knew Montas has been an injury prone player but it seems like the Mets front office likes to play a little game and see who they can make into somewhat or a diamond in the rough. We saw it with Manaea, Severino, Peterson and throughout Quintanas time especially his last few months on this team last season. But let’s start in house.
We can’t turn to Christian Scott as he is still recovering from his Tommy John but The Mets have an abundance of pitchers in their farm system that are relatively talked about around the fandom like Brandon Sproat, Blade Tidwell, Nolan Mclean, Dom Hamel and so on. Right now the best bet out of these players is clearly Sproat. He shot up the ranks in the minor leagues BUT struggled in his short time in Syracuse closer to the end of the season. Many thought he could be a secret weapon in our push in to and in the playoffs but he was not. He finished the season with a 3.40 ERA after starting in Single A with a stat line of 2-1 1.07 ERA with 33 Ks in 6 games. In Double AA he went 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 games started with 77 Ks. But like previously stated once he got to Syracuse he struggled with a 1-2 record and a 7.53 ERA in 7 games started and only racking up 21 strikeouts and an BA against him of .314. I know you’re probably thinking well that’s terrible how is he going to play against the major league players well he needs the time. If he comes up to start the season he will get a sample size of what it’s like against the major league players and obviously that can go good or bad but thats what these young players need. Luisangel Acuña got that at the end of the season and he produced especially in Lenders absence with his back injury. Mark Vientos as much as it sucked to see him come up to go right back down he needed it to become the player he was last season and that we hope continues to be. We know Sproat has been working to perfect his mistakes he made in Triple A, he’s rocking the stache and a flow, and we know what he can be capable of without a doubt at least the Mets should give him a shot IF he also proves it in Spring Training because that could easily go to someone else.
The Mets could always turn back to an old friend from last season and bring Jose Quintana back in. Rumors have been going around the spaces that the Mets are interested in doing so but I won’t believe it till I see it. Quintana definitely had his ups and downs throughout last season going 10-10 for the year in 31 starts but he came in clutch in the tail end and helped us get to the NLCS. He gave us some good innings and plenty of good outings in September leading into October. He knows the system, players, and is one of the players to acknowledge and admire Alvarez behind the plate. It could be a short term thing because we know Manaea and Montas will be back and it HOPEFULLY won’t be long but if he’s on his game he can provide what is needed to help this team out.
We as Mets fans are no strangers to things like this. There’s always more than one BUT I am a believer that there is no need to panic until necessary. Yes it’s scary, Yes it’s OBNOXIOUS that there’s always something but if last year proved anything these guys are capable of some crazy things with whoever is available. If Steve, Alex, and David can make some decisions just to patch some things up for the time being then we will be okay. This team will have fight in them.
